217. La Planete Sauvage (Fantastic Planet) (1973)

On the planet Ygam, in the far future, giant blue natives (“Draags”) keep the imported humans (“Oms”) as exotic pets. However, many humans escape captivity and live in parks as an invasive species. Terr, a pet Om, learns to read the Draag’s language, and must find a way to bring human intelligence to the Draag’s attention, or else escape the planet altogether, before they exterminate all wild Oms.

By portraying humans as animals, it turns the tables on us in terms of cruelty and so, like Bambi, it is very successful at teaching kids to feel bad for tormenting animals - that is, if you can get a kid to watch this crazy shit. (My brother and I liked this movie when we were children, so it’s not impossible.) Based on a French novel, Oms en Serie by Stefan Wul, the alien landscape and animals Fantastic Planet contains are strange without surcease, and the music sounds like late Pink Floyd. The art is extremely unusual, and appears to be drawn with pen and ink or graphite, rather than painted on cels. This movie is very easily available in English, and for some reason it played on TV a lot in the 70’s and 80’s. I highly recommend guilt-tripping your favorite children in your life by making them watch this movie.
